This pattern was designed with a memory quilt in mind. Although it could be constructed using any number of cotton fabrics, the one pictured here was made with fabrics cut from men’s shirts. Of course, if clothing is not available, just go to the store with your special person in mind, and choose something that reminds you of him or her.

The background fabric in this design is lightweight denim, and the plaid fabric squares were fused to it with Wonder Under. Then, after they were all fused on, I sandwiched the batting and backing with the top, and zig-zag stitched — with a regular home sewing machine — around the edges of each piece of fabric in the design. By layering the fabrics before stitching the blocks, I saved time by going through all layers and quilting the project at the same time I was finishing the raw edges.

As for choosing fabrics, look for lights and darks that contrast enough for the heart and border pieces to be distinguished from the background. The finished project measures approximately 32″ by 32″.
