You've followed the threading diagram, clipped the thread tails, and started sewing. Instead of a neat overlock, you get loose loops, broken thread, or no chain at all. That frustrating result doesn't necessarily mean your serger is defective. Often, the thread has missed a guide or failed to seat inside a tension disk.
Learning how to thread a serger becomes much easier when you treat the machine as a connected system rather than a collection of confusing arrows. The order matters, but so do the presser-foot position, the tension disks, every guide point, and the way you rethread after a break. Once those details make sense, the process becomes repeatable.
A first-time serger user often opens the front cover, sees several thread colors crossing through loopers and guides, and reaches for the manual with growing doubt. A conventional sewing machine usually has one needle thread and one bobbin thread. Thread the right needle after both loopers. Pass the thread through the upper guides, into the appropriate tension disk, down through the needle bar guides, and through the needle eye in the direction specified by your manual. Finish with the left needle.
Color-coding makes this much easier. For example, use one color for the upper looper, another for the lower looper, and contrasting colors for the two needles. If a loop appears on the wrong side of the fabric, you'll be able to follow that thread visually from the stitch back toward its path.
A missed guide is more important than a missed arrow. Trace the entire route from cone to eye, not just the final section near the needle or looper.

After all paths are threaded, lower the presser foot, hold the thread tails behind the foot, and turn the handwheel or sew slowly according to your machine's instructions. Test on scrap fabric before placing your project under the presser foot.
A serger can be threaded in the correct order and still produce an unbalanced stitch. Before turning tension dials, inspect the stitch and ask where each thread is sitting. The visible thread position usually points toward the adjustment you need.
Test on a scrap piece of the project fabric. Use a short seam, stop the machine, and examine both sides of the overlock instead of adjusting while sewing continuously.

Puckering may involve more than thread tension, so don't force a dial adjustment when the thread path is uncertain. First restore a correctly seated path, then test again. A balanced stitch should hold the fabric edge neatly without obvious loops crossing to the wrong side.
A broken thread in the middle of a project can make a beginner think the entire machine must be dismantled. Sometimes a full rethread is the safest option, but the tie-on method can make a routine color change or thread replacement much easier.
The method is straightforward. Cut the old thread near the cone, tie the new thread to the remaining old thread, and pull the new thread through the existing guides. The knot should be compact and secure enough to travel through the path without separating.

Changing only one strand can work, but it requires a test. If the stitch collapses after one thread breaks, stop sewing and inspect all active paths.
